Google has finally released
Android Nougat on August 22. LG V20 will be the first brand new smartphone
running Nougat. Google has already started to deliver the updates to the Nexus
devices.
The new Android Nougat is
completely going to change the face of mobile computing experience. It comes
with so many major changes which had never happened in previous android version
updates history. Here’s a glimpse on some of the amazing new features and how
you can use it to rip the most benefit out of it.
- Finally Split-Screen comes to mobile:
Split-screen which were only
available on PC’s , is now a thing of past. Nougat has this Split-screen
feature which you can use in both landscape and portrait mode, with the two
windows only being resizable in portrait mode.
Its a little bit confusing for
naive users but once you learn to use this feature to its fullest ; surely
you will save a lot of your time by multi-tasking.
- Switching between apps more smoothly:
Now you can switch between your
two most recent apps quickly by simply double-tapping the App Overview button.
You can use this feature system-wide; also in the secondary window of
split-screen mode.
This feature along with
split-screen mode can be used to triple-task.
- Redesigned, Bundled and Quick Reply-able Notifications:
The notifications area in Nougat
has got a major makeover. The notifications cards has gone super flat and
full-width. Basically there’s three views of notifications in Nougat: the
super-compact lock screen view, the slightly-more-informative notifications
shade view, and the expanded view with ‘quick actions’ . You can access
‘Quick actions’ by swiping down on a notification. Also the notifications of
same category are bundled.
So the new notifications in
Nougat will give you more and compact information , waste less space and
the amazing ‘Quick actions’ to reply on the go without opening the particular
app.You can also prioritize and customize so as to what notifications and how
much information in them you would like.
- Design your own System UI:
For those of you who prefer to
customize the UI instead of using the stock Android UI, System UI Tuner is for
you.It provides you with a lot of options for customizing the look and control
of your device UI. You can add System UI Tuner to your Settings menu by just
tapping and holding the gear icon in the Quick Settings until it spins and your
device vibrates.
- Customizable Quick Settings:
In stock Android Nougat you’ll
now have a handy list of five toggles at the top of your notifications shade.
The order of this list can be edited to make sure only the most important
shortcuts for you are present. The small arrow on the right hand side will take
you to the full Quick Settings page, which you can also access with the
familiar two-finger swipe-down gesture from the top of the screen. But the
important thing is that the developers can now create custom Quick Settings
tiles for their apps.
- Doze Mode on the Go:
The enhanced Doze Mode now works
not only when the device is stationary but also when it is in motion.
It’s a Two-Layer system. Suppose
you are moving with your phone in your pocket, then Nougat will restrict network
access and tasks running in background. It’s like sleep mode in PCs. For when
your phone will be stationary it will go into a more deeper hibernation with no
network access, no running jobs, no wakelocks and no GPS or Wi-Fi scanning..
- Multi-language support, emoji and app links:
In Nougat, now you can set
multiple locales as well as a primary and secondary language — and switch
easily between them. This feature is definitely going to make chatting and
texting more interesting for bi-lingual Android users and frequent travelers.
There’s 72 new emoji, various
skin tones courtesy of Unicode 9 and still lot more to come to make you express
yourself with graphics. It will make chatting more of a fun.
You can also control how much
information is displayed on-screen by changing the DPI with the DPI changer in
the Display settings.
- Seamless updates:
Android Nougat has also
introduced an automatic updater which will download and install updates
automatically much like other Operating Systems on PCs.
It can be annoying for some users
(as it will consume your expensive data pack) but ultimately it will give you
the best experience of android.
- Vulkan, Java 8 and OpenJDK:
Nougat deprecated the OpenGl API
and added the support to Vulkan API. Vulkan graphics API is by the same people
i.e., OpenGL but it will give you faster, smoother and better rendered gaming
graphics. So a very good news for all the Game lovers. And seriously, who
doesn’t play games on Android.
There’s a good news for
developers also. Nougat now supports Java 8 which will allow developers to rip
the benefits of new features of Java 8. And for users, they can expect more
better functionalities in coming months.
- Other important features:
There are many other important
features in Android Nougat which makes Nougat the most awesome of Android, like
- New Settings menu
- Do Not Disturb
- Data Saver
- Changes in Recent Apps view
- Enhanced security
- Faster processing
- Encryption at file level
- Managing app folder access
- Enhanced Number blocking/call screening
- Emergency info (which can be seen in an emergency even while the screen is locked)
- Better backups and Accessibility settings
- Android for Work
and other tiny bit of changes.
Now you know how amazing and full
of new productivity increasing features Android Nougat comes with. So what are
you waiting for , just go and update your device if you are able to get
the updates, otherwise you can also flash the ROM and install it manually.
There’s something for everyone in
Nougat. Users has been given utmost control on how they want to customize it
for themselves and at the same time, nerdy-details have been cleverly hidden
for ‘not so tech-savvy’ persons.
This is perhaps, the best Google could deliver
in Android 7.0 Nougat. It’s an Android version for Android fans. It’s
remarkably stable with only a few inconsistencies and bugs: certainly the
fewest I’ve ever seen on a new Android version.
