In this world of smart phone apps, every now and then a new company
comes up with an app and that sparks enormous amount of controversy. One of
those app is now doing the rounds in the market. Sarahah. An app that has got
parents in the UK and US on their toes merely a month after it made its way to
their teenager’s smartphones.
What is it with Sarahah? Let’s explore.
What is Sarahah?
Sarahah is an anonymous messaging/texting service. Once a user
registers, they can spread the link of their Sarahah account to their friends
or post it via social media platforms. Now anyone with that link can send them
anonymous messages. The recipient has no way of knowing who posted the message
or responding to it in any way.
Sarahah used to only exist as a website created by the Saudi Arabian
developer Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq. The purpose started with the employees who can
post anonymous messages to their employer. It gave a voice to those who had
something to speak about, but never came out as they had the fear of getting
fired.
Later, Tawfiq deliberately thought of taking it to a new level and
launching it among a huge base where people speak their heart out. With friends
and acquaintances anonymously giving feedback to each other, this can become
the new talk of the town. That part of the website is
what actually made it well-liked and trendy in the Middle East and Africa.
On June 13 2017, Tawfiq released an app version of Sarahah on both the
iOS App Store and Google Play, and it spread like wildfire, entering the Top
Three Free apps on both platforms in no time and making the social media
platforms go all green and white (The Sarahah post color!). This surge in
popularity was also aided by the app’s easy way to share it via any social
media platform. Be it in Facebook or in Snapchat, Sarahah messages started to
pop out from everywhere.
The Drawbacks
Though once it started off as a connective app in an organization, its
usage became more and more unofficial than being official. From being the
employee’s punching bag, it started becoming a verbal battleground of the
teens. Anonymous messages are becoming the parameters on which people are
judging themselves. Though some are finding it fun, others are finding it
annoying to see their timeline flooding with messages they can’t even relate
too.
But it is for sure, Sarahah has got quite few accounts in this mean time
and the idea is already a hot cake in the market. In this era of smartphone,
every new innovative app is something that the target audience will surely try
to hit and make something out of it. And when it comes to innovative app ideas,
